Alonissos, IKION, Achilleiadromia have been some of the island's names during its long history, which begins from the 9th millennium b.C.

IKOS is a protohellenic name, attributed to the leader of the first Protohellenes settlers of Alonissos.

Thanks to its position the island became a trade center, a place where ships could get provisions and exchange goods. Due to its location -central to all the sea routes to the south and the east- it became a melting pot of various cultural influences and a center of civilization.
